Puglia is not just beaches!

A short and rather unscientific poll of some friends who have never visited Puglia and only holiday in Tuscany has led to this post. There are a few myths about Puglia that need laying to rest!

Myth 1: Nothing happens there

Among many, many other things, there are museums, cathedrals, fashion shows, art galleries, pop concerts, theatres, golf courses and designer shopping. Puglia is one of the leading regions for alternative energy and its dynamic young residents are among Italy’s most cyber savvy. Many international stars perform in Puglia. And Salento (where our holiday masserias are located) is a favourite hot spot of the glitterati.

Myth 2: It’s all about the beach

Yes, the beaches are beautiful and the two seas are only minutes away. But there are also dazzling cities like Lecce and Otranto, charming villages and towns and gorgeous countryside generously sprinkled with a million olive trees. Plus all the points mentioned above!

Myth 3: The food and wine is quite basic

Puglia produces award-winning wines. Its cuisine, focussing on seafood and fresh fruit and vegetables is famous throughout Italy. There are over 100 restaurants within 15 minutes of the Essentis holiday masserias.

Myth 4: It’s cut off

Puglia is easily accessible and has two international airports at Bari and Brindisi. there are also ports at Bari and Brindisi with regular ferries across the Adriatic to Montenegro, Croatia, Greece and its islands.

Myth 5: Everyone lives in trulli houses

Those cute little conical houses are part of Puglia’s heritage. Less well-known are the vast geometric masseria buildings which are reminiscent of Greek architecture. It is these traditional fortified courtyard houses, with their high ceilings and spacious feel which inspired the award-winning modern masseria masterpieces we have available for holidays!
